The Smaller Gardens

Aside from the two main gardens in Ferdows, there are a number of smaller or niche gardens. These include the Rock Garden, The Rose Garden, the Japanese Niche and the Woodland Gardens.

The rocks in the Rock Garden are very large.  2/3 of the rock is buried.  These large buried structures form a series of small dams that slow down the water and allow most of it to drain into the ground and not as run-off. To further slow down the water, gravel is added on top to further assist in slowing the water flow.  The garden is in full sun and facing west.  So, heat-loving plants are added to it.

Outside the walled garden is the star-shaped Rose Garden, made in the exact size and shape of the Star Pond (level 3) and Star Patio (level 4). This star shape is formed when six dodecagons (12-sided) shapes overlap. It is repeated throughout to knit the various elements in Ferdows together.

The Japanese corner is home to the lanterns and statues we brought back from our stay in Japan in the 1990s. Dwarf trees in stone containers, previously trained as bonsai, are kept in this niche and help evoke memories of Japan.

The Woodland Gardens are many rather small areas, approximately 30 square feet each, where the natural woods are underplanted with shade-loving perennials and spring flowering bulbs.  These are at their best in early spring before the trees leaf out.
