The Persian Garden

The Persian Garden is the main garden, built between 2000 and 2002.  It is heavily inspired by the Shahzadeh Garden in Mahan, Iran.  It is terraced into four levels, shaped to represent half of an arched window of the house.  Its “walls” are 20 Jane magnolias on either side. Its length is the square of the height of the house, its width is the width of the house.  Each level has a pond shaped as a twelve-sided structure to match the 12-sided house.  The edges maybe cutoff to accommodate the rill that connects all the ponds and acts as a waterfall.   The pond sizes follow the Fibonacci sequence (level 2= 5’, level 3= 8’, level 4 = 13’, level 1=21’). In compliance with the traditional “chahar-bag” or quadrant design of all Persian gardens, each level is divided into quadrants. It is planted with over 70 different varieties of perennials, shrubs and bulbs.
