Art in the Garden

The Garden and garden design are, of course, artistic endeavors in their own right, but usually, adding a piece of art, a statue, a beautiful seat, or a painting that can withstand the elements adds to our enjoyment of the garden and highlights a particular corner of the garden.

During our travels, we have collected some iconic garden elements which we have incorporated into the Garden.

As you enter Ferdows, two old Chinese hitching posts from Shanxi Province during the Qing dynasty welcome the visitor.

Two white, marble Foo Dogs guard the entrance to the walled garden.

Our statue of Venus emerging from the shell was bought in Cambridgeshire, England, around 1990.

The two Indian Aspara were bought in India in 1994 for our garden in Virginia and they traveled with us to Maryland when we built Ferdows.

Fortunately, there are local artists whose work not only enhances aspects of the garden, but having their pieces featured allows us to appreciate and showcase their talents.

The entrance to the walled garden is enhanced by two welcoming pineapples on either side of the entry created by Jan Kirsh, Jan’s exuberant sculptures of fruits and vegetables seemed a perfect way to welcome visitors to a garden of vegetables and tropicals.

In the wildflower meadow, we meet with the work of another local artist, Larry Ringgold, whose driftwood animals feel as if they just walked out of the forest to join one. “Tip Toes” is Larry’s name for our beloved unicorn., who seems to be enjoying foraging in the grass and among the flowers.
